Jesus is the Door
…simple joy by simpler living
Today’s Bible Study topic is about Jesus being The Door.
John 10:7-9 ESV
So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

I looked up a few of the original Greek words in Strong’s concordance and Vine’s Bible Dictionary to try to understand this verse more deeply.

Door – G2374 thura
This is the same Greek word used in Rev. 3:20 of Christ’s “entrance” into a repentant believers heart.
Jesus is the door/portal/gate of the sheep/His children.
Saved – G4982 sōzō
delivered, protected (literally or figuratively), heal, preserve, do well, make whole, inclusively for all the blessings bestowed by God on men in Christ
If anyone enters through Jesus, he will be saved/delivered/made whole...

Pasture – G5342 nomē (noun)
food (pasturage), (figuratively in John 10:9)
Dictionary.com– an area covered with grass or other plants used or suitable for the grazing of livestock
…and will go in and out and find pasture/provision.
Jesus is the Only Door?
John 10:7 very clearly shows that the Bible states that Jesus is the only “door” we can enter to be saved. “The Door” is very clear. Jesus has given us a simple and clear path to be saved.
Saved from What?
Saved from the separation that our sin created. There is a GREAT chasm between our sinful nature and the perfection and holiness of God. Throughout the Bible when people encountered God or angels that were in His presence, they would literally fall down. Fall down and recognize the pure, blinding holiness of God and how dirty our sin makes us. We are headed to an eternal destiny of separation from God forever if something doesn’t change.
God is holiness, perfection and everything good. If we are separated from Him for all of eternity, that means separated from everything good. That just leaves everything bad for us to be with. That is excruciatingly sad and painful. But God loved us so much, He made a plan…
Special
God created us to have a special relationship with Him, unlike anything else in all creation. But our sin separated us from Him. Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That means ALL of us have sinned and ALL fall short of His glory.
Separated… How to be reconciled??
So, we have all sinned. That is clear. If not from the Bible, from our own life experience.
Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death…
Well, that’s even worse news… if we don’t read the end of that verse…
What we know
Our sin separates us from our holy Creator. We are not able to earn our way into heaven because we, ourselves, fall short of God’s standard. That standard is Holy Perfection, as God is. We can be good until we drop. But we still can never be good enough to get rid of the stain of sin that is in each of us. Therefore, we are separated and we can’t get to heaven on our own.
Substitute
So what do we do then?
We need a substitute who could take our place and the penalty for our sins.
But who could be our substitute. Everyone I know, even the nicest people, have all sinned themselves. Everyone but one…
Jesus.
Jesus, God in the flesh. He became man to live the perfect life we couldn’t. To be the only one who take the punishment our sins deserve to reconcile us to God.
The rest of Romans 6:23 tells us this…
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Surrender
All we need to do is Trust in Jesus and HIS good works – not your own – to be reconciled to God forever!
Ephesians 2:8-9 says,
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Jesus is the Door! Trust in Him and walk through the door to eternal life with the God who loves you more than anyone else!
Simple Faith
